4 midweek wins from 4 for our Adult Footballers

Senior Footballers
Our Senior Footballers got their Division 1 league playoff hopes back on track on Wednesday night with a hard fought two point win over Ballymun in Marley Park. After Ballymena registered the first score of the game and trademark Davy Devereux run created space and he found Aodhan Clabby to find the back of the net to give BSJ the advantage. They went from strength to strength stretching their lead to 7 points but Mun kicked the last two scores of the half to make it a 5 point game at half time.

Ballymun got the upper hand at the start of the second half and had it back to a one point game with 8 minutes remaining. Ballinteer kicked the next two scores though, and after two red cards and a black card for Ballymun and a lengthy stoppage, Ballinteer were able to hold out to record a two point win, 1-11 to 0-12.

Junior A Footballers
Our Junior As took on O’Dwyers in Marley Park on Tuesday in a bid to get their promotion bid back on track after a loss to Plunketts in their last outing. They got off to a flying start hitting six of the first seven scores and never looked back from there. They went in at half time 0-14 to 1-03 up. The second half saw BSJ rack up another 1-11 to finish the game 1-25 to 2-07 to keep them right in contention at the top end of Division 5.

Junior B Footballers
The Junior Bs had a fantastic 3-25 to 2-04 victory over Ballyboden in Loreto Park on Tuesday evening. We put together a good overall performance and got all our scores from play. We put some good moves put together and 2 goals from Oran McIvor & 1 from Eoin Coffey, leaving us 6 up at half time. We pushed on after a good start to the 2nd half and ran away comfortable winners. Everyone in the squad played there part but special mentions to Dylan Walsh & Eoin Coffey in defence, Alex Timlin in midfield, Oran McIvor & Cian Hallinan up front.

Junior C Footballers
Midweek away games can be problematic, and being 3 points to zero down with 10 mins gone emphasised this point in our AFL Div 11 game against St James Gaels at Drimnagh Castle on Thursday evening. Despite being behind, we had the bulk of possession but were failing to convert it into scores. From the 10th minute on, our backs shut down traffic towards our end and our centrefield began to take control around the middle. By half time we were 5 – 3 up and despite the low score, we were dominant all over the pitch.
In the second half, the shut-out at the back continued as Gaels failed to register a further score until the 50th minute, due to excellent covering by the wing backs Rob Redmond and Evan Regan. Darragh Quinn, named at No 4, took up a sweeping role in the centre, completely shutting down the supply line to the Gaels inside forwards. A more direct and patient approach up front resulted in the Ballinteer scores now coming thick and fast, with 11 different scorers from play by the end of the game. Gaels threw everything at it in the end, getting 5 more points (3 from play), but the result was well beyond doubt at that stage.
There were many very good performances on the night, but Conor Murphy was the stand out player, being hugely influential in initiating attacks from centrefield as well as chipping in with a goal and 3 points from play.
This result leaves us second in the table with our next match at home on July 7th in Loreto against Shankill GAA, one of our main promotion rivals.

Senior Footballers fall to Brigids, as Junior As and Junior Cs record victories

Senior Football
A returning Paddy Andrews inspired St Brigids to a win in this clash on Sunday morning. In very windy conditions Brigids registered the first point playing into the strong wind. However two goals from the goal scoring machine that is Aaron Bradshaw and another from Glen Whelan, responded to on two occasions by Brigids with their own goals, left the score at 3-3 to 2-4 in favour of BSJ at half time. A strong rear guard defensive display against the wind by BSJ wasn’t enough to prevent Brigids getting the decisive goal late in the second half. The absence through injury of some of our big performers and the loss of two more through injury during the game didn’t help the cause but Brigids ran out 3-10 to 3-06 deserving winners.

Junior A Football
The Jun A team kept up their winning form when they comprehensively beat Ballymun . We started in great style and by half time Peter Flanagan (5),Eoghan Seoige, David Quinn, Naoise Croinin, Niall Dunphy, Colm O Donnell, Shane Mc Cann, Conor Budd, DJ Corbett and David Faughnan all got on the scoreboard. At HT we went in 0-16 to 0-2 up. In a second half which saw goals from Naoise Cronin and Eoghan Seoige there was no let up in the effort and we won on a final score of 2-26 to 0-4.

So at the half way stage in the league we are lying third one point behind Crokes and Templeogue having dropped only 1 point out of 14.

Junior C Football
Missing a good few regular first 15 players and coming off a bruising recent defeat in the last game, this AFL Div 11 South away game could have been a potential banana skin. However, the Ballinteer St Johns 15 who took to the field had other ideas. Opting to play with a strong wind it took less than 3 mins to get the first goal. Over the next 15 mins the floodgates opened, as Ballinteer racked a further 7 goals to lead by 8 – 4 to 3-4 lead at half time. In the second half, playing against the wind, it was a case of absorbing the backlash and closing the game out, which Ballinteer duly did, running out easy winners, 8-10 to 5-07.

There were several impressive aspects of Ballinteer’s play. The support play in the forwards was excellent. Decisiveness in shot taking was first class, with Ryan Hanley (3 goals), Tiernan McDonnell (2-1) and Billy Davern (1-4) getting all their scores from play. In all, there were 8 scorers from play. With such focus on attack, it was inevitable that we would get caught too high up the field and concede some scores. The Boden goals, when they came, were mostly from breaks where we had left ourselves short on cover – something for us to look at in training. The backs were solid throughout, but particularly in the second half when Boden, now playing with a strong wind, threw everything into attack. Joe Sheehan’s shorter kickouts in this half were all won by Ballinteer, with the exception of one which the wind caught and brought out of play. Two of Boden’s goals came late in the game, taking a bit of the gloss off the win, but we are back to winning ways and looking forward to the next game. In the meantime, there is serious competition for starting places, which will make training interesting over the next two weeks.

Midweek wins for Junior A & B footballers as Seniors suffer first defeat of the season

Senior Football

Having won 5 out of 5 the seniors faced a real test against the in form St Judes away in Abbottstown on Wednesday. On the night the much stronger Judes 15 outplayed an understrength BSJ 15. The first 25 minutes was even but 3 points on the trot in the next 5 minutes gave Judes a 9 points to 4 half time advantage. A goal for Judes shortly after the restart sealed our fate and despite great work and endeavour from the lads particularly Eoghan Fitzpatrick, Diarmuid Kennedy and Jamie O’Connor, St Judes ran out comfortable winners. It was a great learning experience for some of the younger members of the panel who played their first full 60 minutes in Division 1.

Junior A Football

Our mid week match saw us pitched against our neighbours Ballyboden. Despite been depleted we started brightly but poor shooting saw us kick 6 wides in the first 15 minutes and allow Boden to go into a 3 point lead. An outstanding goal from Colm O Donnell from an excellent 40 yards pass from Niall Dunphy started a good run of scores and we went in 4 points up at HT. A goal by Shane Mc Cann goal from a penalty mid way through the second half gave us an 7 point lead but we allowed Boden back into the game and the lead was cut to 2 points. We rallied well in the last 5 minutes and won by 5 points on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-13.

Junior B Football

We had a great win 1-16 to 2-8 on Tuesday evening against Innisfails. We started well with good movement up front but we let Innisfails back into it in the 2nd half but we finished strongly including a goal from John Hickey to win by 5 points.
Everyone played their part notably Eoin Walsh in goals, some fine fielding from Denis Healy & Kevin Power, and good forward play by Cian Duffy, David Gillick & Oran McIvor.

Senior Footballers go 5 from 5 in the league, while Junior A’s win and Junior Bs draw

Senior Football

A great win for the senior footballers yesterday against Fingallians to make it 5 out 5 leaving them sitting top of Div 1. In a tough and physical encounter we built up a good lead in the first half with points from Aodhan Clabby, Donncha Carey, Robbie Gaughan amongst others. However a goal for Fingallians before half time brought them back into it. Well taken goals from Luke Naughton and Aaron Bradshaw settled the nerves in the second half and with points including some well worked ones from Bradshaw,  Carey and Michaèl O Croinin we were well worth the winning margin at the end. Final score BSJ 2-16 Fingallians 2-8.

Junior A Football

Having dropped our first point in the league to Round Towers mid week it was important to pick up a win against St Brendans who were a point below us. In an extremely physical and competitive game we started well but failed to put enough on the scoreboard. However the second fifteen minutes of the first half saw us take control and we went in 5 points up at HT . The first 15 minutes of the second half saw us go 8 points up but Brendans pull it back with a few scores on the trot. We scored the next few points and were 6 up five minutes into injury time. There were an unbelievable 14 minutes of injury time during which Brendans bought it back to 3 points but we held on for a very much deserved win on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-13 . All players put in a 100% effort . Best for us were Fionn Mooney, Naoise Cronin, David Faughnan , Niall Dunphy and Shane Mc Cann.

Cian Hallinan rescued a draw for us with a last minute free which he buried into the back of the net! After a great first half from us, Scoil Ui Chonaill got a quick fire 1-03 just before half time to reduce the gap to 6 points going into the break. Scoil came back at us and were on top most of the 2nd half but we kept going and Cian’s last minute goal got us a point!
Special mentions to Kevin Davis, Denis McCambridge, Gavin Fahy, David Gillick, John Hickey & Cian Hallinan.
