Senior And Junior A Hurlers Top Their Leagues With 2 Games Remaining

Our Senior and Junior A hurlers top their Leagues with only 2 games remaining.

On Wednesday night our Senior Hurlers traveled over to St Anne’s Park to take on Raheny, this would be a big test for Johns having lost their first league game of the season in the previous round of matches.

From the first whistle the lads looked focused and were setting the tempo of the game.

Early scores from James Gilligan and Tom Aherne had the scoreboard ticking over but it was the work rate in the half back line and midfield that was the key to Ballinteer’s dominance.

The Smith brothers Sean and Brian were like animals in the wild stalking their prey and once the ball hit the ground pouncing on it with grit and determination. Rob Aherne harassed the opposition and was a willing runner going forward.

An Aodhan Clabby goal just before the break saw Johns Lead 1.11 to 0.05 at half time.

In the second half Raheny to their credit battled hard and made a few tactical switches but Johns weren’t to be stopped knowing the importance of this game and the performance as a whole. Gavin O’Broin came in off the bench and put the icing on the cake with a lovely goal after sidestepping his man and placing the ball past the keeper.

Final Score: Ballinteer St. Johns 2.16 Raheny 0.09

On Thursday night our Junior A hurlers went over to Mobhi road to face Na Fianna knowing that a win would put them top of the table.

An early goal from Mick Bradley was the perfect start for Johns but Na Fianna weren’t going to give up that easy and answered back with some brilliant points. Johns tagged over a few points before the end of the half but neither team could get any kind of rhythm going in what was a tense first half. Half Time score BSJ 1.08 Na Fianna 0.10

With the game as tight as it was and neither team willing to give an inch Ballinteer knew the importance goals would play and in the second half they went for the jugular. Goals from Darren Hudson and Rob Sheridan combined with some great saves at the other end by Dara Taaffe and Johns began to pull away. A late goal by Na Fianna threatened to spark some kind of fight back but Oisin Power stepped up and in his always cool and composed style stuck over a long range free to finish the game.

Final Score: Ballinteer St. Johns 3.12 Na Fianna 1.14

Both teams have 2 games remaining against Oliver Plunkets and Whitehall both in Marley Park.

Minor B Footballers win League

BSJ 3-7 Crumlin 0-14
The Minor B footballers won the Division 4 South League with a great win over Crumlin in their final league match last Tuesday evening. Against a Crumlin side unbeaten in the league, a win for either side would see them declared league winners.
After a close first half Crumlin led by a single point 0-8 to 2-1, with Oisin Cronin in goal giving another great performance. In the 2nd half, Crumlin quickly stretched their lead to 3 points, before BSJ took control, with a goal and a couple of well taken points edging them in front. From there on, the team played resolutely against Crumlin who never gave up, but found there was no way past a strong defence marshalled by Alexander Lanigan and Cian Creighton. With the lead reduced to a single point in the final minutes, the whole team nervelessly played some brilliant football, Lughaidh Lynch converting a 45m free in the final seconds to put the game beyond Crumlin.

It is a brilliant reward for all the squad who have competed so well in the league, losing only one game all season. A special word of thanks is due to Darren Chambers and his U16 players who contributed so much to the success of the team.
